Board Waits On Merger Study Funding Decision

Last Updated: August 4, 2011

Deciding whether the Town will extend funding to pay for a merger study fiscal impact analysis if the need arises seemed a bit premature to Board members.

A decision was tabled until quotes are received from the financial institutions bidding on the job.  Deadline for the quotes is August 5 and the Merger Study Committee is scheduled to open the bids and award the job at its August 8 meeting.

The concern came from Village President and Committee Co-chairperson Diane Wiedenbeck. She felt the amount might exceed the $5,000 that the Village put up to pay for the analysis.

Town Chairman and Merger Study Co-chairman Kris Hampton told Board members their August 1 meeting that Wiedenbeck said there was a case she knew about where more than $60,000 was paid for an analysis.  His statement was met with laughter from Board members reacting to what they felt was an excessive cost.

Widenbeck said, in a follow-up email, that the amount Hampton referred to was for the Verona merger project with a cost of $69,000.  “We are no where near needing that much information, nor did we request that kind of information,” said Wiedenbeck. “Our request was fairly basic.”

Hampton said to Board members that he was uncertain how much the analysis would cost.  “She (Wiedenbeck) wanted to see if it comes in at $12,000 or whatever there would be money to cover it instead of coming back to us a week later.”

Supervisor Mike Kindschi, who served on a previous merger study group and volunteered to be on the current merger study committee, said he thought it was premature to have a consultant on the project.
