The reconstruction of I-94 in Dane County has been completed just in time to handle increased traffic volumes for deer hunting season and the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s Southwest Region.
The $44 million project, begun in 2009 under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), replaced three bridges and expanded the highway from four to six lanes between the Badger Interchange in Madison and County Highway N in Cottage Grove.
All lanes are open to traffic. The posted speed limit is 65 mph. Periodic shoulder closures are ongoing for removal of construction equipment.
The project was advanced one year through ARRA to help meet growing traffic volumes and deteriorating pavement conditions on a major hub along Wisconsin’s Interstate system. I-94 merges with I-39/90 in the area to form the Badger Interchange.
Current average daily traffic volume along I-94 in Dane County are 53,175; projected volume for 2030 is 77,605.
