'No Weapons' Sign Proposal Shot Down By Board

All signs pointed to no signs being posted that would restrict persons from carrying concealed weapons into Town buildings.

The Board at its October 17 meeting unanimously rejected an option of Wisconsin’s Act 35 Concealed Carry Act that would have used signs at municipal building entrances to ban legally armed persons from entering with concealed weapons.

“I guess when I’m here I’m not worried about it,” said Town Clerk Kim Banigan answering a question of whether she thought the signs would bring an added level of security to her as she worked at the Town Hall.

“Having a sign by the door isn’t going to stop anyone who wants to come in and use a gun,” said Supervisor Mike Kindschi.

The Conceal Carry law will go into effect on November 1. Weapons eligible for carry include handguns, electric weapons (pasers, etc.), knives (except switchblades) and billy clubs.

Using the signs seemed contradictory to Supervisor Mike Fonger.  Why stop people from doing something that is legal, said Fonger, supporting the rights of gun owners who had gone through all the legal channels and done the four hour training to become legally certified to carry a gun.

The signs would have cost $7.50 each.
