If awarded, approximately $18,000 in town road improvement grant money will help pay for the estimated $140,000 project.
The roadway slated for work is a one-mile stretch going north from County Highway BB to the I-94 bridge. Baxter Road is a primary thoroughfare for commuters coming from the east and heading to the I-94 interchange at County Highway N. The road which shows obvious wear from years of traffic and weathering will have its top layer scraped off and a new layer of “cold mix” blacktop put in its place. Town Public Works Head Jeff Smith says the cold mix will incur less cracking and have a longer life expectancy than the hot asphalt normally used.
“It’s warm during application but it’s not super heated like hot asphalt,” said Smith who added that the cold mix is said to use more environmentally friendly ingredients.
