Plan For Cross-Town House Haul Called 'Ambitious'

Last Updated: September 22, 2011

Doug Allen’s plan to move a 47 by 47 foot home from its current foundation at 4618 County Road N to his property on Nora Road was called “ambitious” by one Town Plan Commission member.

The home currently sits on land owned by Dennis and Kami Viney who are planning on building a new auto repair shop on the site, moving from their current location at 4091 Highway N.

But Allen sees it differently. “With my age and everything else, it got me to wonder,” said the 57-year-old Cottage Grove man about all the permits and everything else involved in making the move happen. Not to mention that winter is coming and the thought of taking on such a significant project while trying to dodge the melee of winter storms that frequent the area seemed less than desirable.

Because of the weather’s uncertainty, the Town Board approved a Plan Commission motion to approve the site plan for the new house and to give Allen six months until after occupancy permit receipt to remove the existing home.

The home currently sits on land owned by Dennis and Kami Viney who are planning on building a new auto repair shop on the site, moving from their current location at 4091 Highway N.

The proposed route to get the home to its new location will go south along County Highway N to eastbound U.S. Highway 12 and 18 and left on Nora Road to its destination. Allen said they will have to take the 12 and 18 route since taking Nora Road from County Highway N would be too narrow at points for the home to make it through. Allen also said that contractor managing the move Dennis Childs from Heritage Builders said that while the driveway is quite narrow leading up to the area where the home will finally be placed, he feels there will be no problem reaching the spot.
